America continues to face crises which test the readiness of all citizens. That’s why it is every American’s responsibility to be prepared – and the USciences community is no exception.

In observance of National Preparedness Month, the University’s Department of Public Safety will host its first emergency preparedness day on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Wilson Hall. This year’s national preparedness theme, “You Can Be the Hero,” asks all Americans to ready themselves to assist in case of emergency.
“By planning for emergencies, all members of the University community can protect themselves and their peers, while also contributing to our community’s resilience,” said James Waldon, director of public safety. “This awareness month is solely dedicated on refocusing our efforts on readying ourselves and our community for any crisis we may face.”
During the event next Thursday, public safety will give out 500 free disaster kits stocked with items such as first-aid supplies, bottled water, a flashlight, and a face mask. Students who sign up to receive the emergency text messaging alerts on-site that day will also be entered into a raffle for one of several prizes. Several games coinciding with the event’s theme will also be offered to students throughout the day.Prizes include car wash gift cards and USciences apparel.
The Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments will also be on hand to speak to students around 12:30 p.m. in Wilson lobby, and a fire truck will be on display in the parking lot.
Waldon urges all students, staff, and faculty members to report any and all suspicious and activity around campus to public safety. In the event of an emergency, dial (215) 596-7000 or 911; for a non-emergency, call (215) 896-1117.
