USciences Provost Dr. Russell J. DiGate announced his resignation to the USciences community effective July 12, 2012.
“The recruitment of a new president is a time of rejuvenation and new beginnings for any institution. I believe it is time for a new beginning for me as well. It has been my pleasure to serve the faculty and administration of the University as the provost these past three and a half years as well as serving as dean of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy for the preceding four and a half years,” Dr. DiGate wrote.
Dr. DiGate assumed the provost position full-time in November 2008 after serving in the position on an interim basis following the departure of Dr. Gary Sayed in September 2008. Prior to becoming provost, Dr. DiGate had served as dean of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy since August 2004. Before coming to USciences, Dr. DiGate had served numerous roles at University of Maryland's School of Pharmacy between 1997 and 2004. He earned a PhD from the University of Rochester and did postdoctoral research at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
“We have accomplished many objectives during this period, and I am especially proud of working with all of you in the development of a number of seminal projects,” Dr. DiGate said in his announcement. “The thing I am most proud of, however, is having the privilege of calling so many wonderful people friends.”
Incoming President Dr. Helen Giles-Gee begins her tenure on Monday, July 16. An announcement regarding the future of the provost position is expected shortly thereafter.
In a message to the campus community, Dr. Helen Giles-Gee has named Chief of Staff Dr. Peter Miller to fill the iterim provost role.
Dear Campus Community:
After consultation with the representatives of various campus constituency groups, I have appointed Dr. Peter Miller current Chief of Staff to the President to serve as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs to begin immediately. His term will end on June 30, 2013, with the appointment of a provost after a national search. I will provide more details about that search in a later communication. I will communicate with the campus about my choice to serve as Interim Chief-of-Staff after I interview candidates recommended to me by members of your shared governance representatives (e.g., Staff Assembly, Faculty Senate) and others.
Please join me in sending Peter our best wishes and assurance of collegial support as he assumes this important role.
