Wireless Access

University of the Science is pleased to announce the expansion of wireless internet access on campus. All buildings – with the exception of the 4140 building which is undergoing renovations – now have wireless coverage. We are still in the process of fine-tuning the system for optimal coverage but, for the most part, you should be able to connect to wireless in every building. Student owned wireless access points and routers are not permitted as they will not function properly and may cause problems for others. We welcome faculty, staff and students to use the wireless network and hope it will enhance your educational experience.
The wireless network should be considered as an enhancement to the University of the Sciences network and not a replacement for the wired network. Although the wireless network provides nearly the same experience as the wired network, the nature of the technology means it is prone to minor interruptions and slow downs. There may be differences in how an application or website performs on the wireless network as compared to the hard wired connection in your office, classroom, or residence hall. The wireless network does not provide the same security and performance as the wired network.

(Please note it is NOT possible at this time to print from your computer on the wireless network to a printer in your office, classroom or lab. If you need to print please use a computer connected to a hardwired connection.)

To use wireless internet access on campus, you will need to perform these steps:

  1. Get a wireless card - The University is supporting a wireless - 802.11B, 802.11G and 802.11N network. Wireless cards are now offered as built-in options on most laptops and other mobile devices. If you do not have this option, you can purchase one at a local computer store.
  2. Configure your card - Once you purchase your card follow the setup directions.
  3. Choose one of the following wireless networks and connect.

There are three unique wireless networks available:

usip-wireless: This is the standard wireless network for casual use in all University buildings that are not residence halls. Internet surfing and access to University websites are permitted without any authentication.

trusted: This network provides a higher degree of security and allows access to internal resources such as network home shares, remote desktop and Datatel. The trusted network requires an additional network key/password as well as registering your wireless mac address with IT for access (contact the IT Help Desk for assistance).

Residence Halls: This is the standard wireless network for casual use in the residence Halls. You will need a valid University of the Sciences username and password to access this network through our Cisco Clean Access system.

If you have questions, please contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.
