University of the Sciences' 22nd President


A week-long celebration concluded with the Inauguration of Dr. Helen F. Giles-Gee as the 22nd president of University of the Sciences on April 19, 2013. More than 50 dignitaries from colleges and universities in the region and beyond as well as local and national politicians, and faculty, staff, and students were on hand for the historic event. Dr. Giles-Gee focused her speech on the theme "A New Era of Opportunities: Teaching, Service, and Student Research" for the campus community.

Camups Update

Conferment and Commencement Ceremonies: USciences will hold its annual bachelor's degree conferment ceremony on Friday, May 17 on campus with keynote speaker Dr. David M. Gibson, professor emeritus at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

The University's 192nd commencement ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 22 at the Liacouras Center (1776 North Broad St., Philadelphia). An honorary doctor of science degree will be conferred on Kenneth A. Dickinson P'68, MS, president of the board of directors for Secundum Artum Reaching Pharmacists with Help.

USciences Joins LEAP Employer-Educator Compact: The initial signatories to this ongoing national initiative by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) will ensure that today’s students will be well-prepared for economic, civic, and global challenges.

The Elixir Celebrates 50 years: The Elixir turned 50 years young this year. Staff, contributors, and former editors celebrated the occasion on April 5.

Creative alumni, student, faculty and staff writers and artists gathered on campus on April 5 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Elixir and its 2013 anniversary edition, which features the best writing from the past 50 years. Guests enjoyed readings, catching up with old friends, and feasting on fabulous fare.

Obituary: George J. Malmberg P'72
The University community was saddened to learn of the passing of George J. Malmberg P'72, co-founder and chief executive officer of Wedgewood Pharmacy, on April 22. George was a great supporter of USciences. His advocacy on behalf of compounding pharmacists had an international impact, and his loss will be felt throughout the worldwide pharmacy community and especially here at USciences. Read more

On Thursday, April 4, 2013, the USciences Alumni Association inducted its new officers and directors for 2013-2014.

Alumni/Student Career Panel
On April 10, six USciences alumni who majored in chemistry as students were invited to participate on a career panel. The event, co-sponsored by the Alumni Relations and Career Services departments, was designed to help students majoring in chemistry make career decisions. Alumni panelists shared their experiences and expertise on topics ranging from choosing a graduate school to finding a stimulating position at a company with the proper life/work balance.
