DEPARTMENT: Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences, at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, invites applications to fill two 10-month tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2014. The successful candidates will have earned a PhD, have postdoctoral experience, and will be expected to develop an extramurally-funded research program with emphasis on use of molecular or genomic approaches in prokaryotic or eukaryotic systems in one or a combination of the following disciplines: microbiology; natural product biology/pharmacognosy; immunology; genetics; or biotechnology. Preference will be given to individuals whose research makes use of integrated approaches that span disciplinary boundaries and complements the research interests in the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The successful candidates will also be expected to participate in existing graduate programs (MS in Cell Biology & Biotechnology and PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology), and teach introductory and upper level undergraduate courses and laboratories. Laboratory space and start-up funds will be provided to the successful candidates. This student-focused department requires a commitment to research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and service.
The Department of Biological Sciences has 17 full-time faculty members. These new positions represent the continuing expansion of the department over the next three to four years. The department has ca. 160 undergraduate majors, divided among BS programs in biology, microbiology, environmental science, biomedical science and medical laboratory science. There are ca. 40 full- and part-time graduate students. The department is housed in the McNeil Science and Technology Center, a new facility for its growing programs.
The University of the Sciences was originally founded in 1821 as the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. It is a unique health sciences university of ca. 3000 students, with programs in the natural sciences, pharmacy, and other health-related areas.
