Fellowship Overview

The mission of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration one and two-year post-graduate industry fellowship training programs is to prepare the industry fellow to succeed in a competitive environment within the pharmaceutical industry, and to assume roles and responsibilities within Medical Information.. The fellow will gain a deeper understanding of the patient care process and the ability to apply that knowledge when making decisions or implementing programs that affect patients.

The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USciences) is an independent institution of higher education with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service.  The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP) at USciences in conjunction with Janssen Scientific Affairs (JSA) offers positions in a two-year post-graduate training program. This multi-setting fellowship is organized to provide experiences leading to advanced professional skills in medical and scientific information for pharmacists wishing to pursue a career in drug information in the pharmaceutical industry or academic setting and experience in a clinical practice setting in a designated therapeutic area.

The Medical Information/Clinical Practice Fellowship is organized into 3 components:

Pharmaceutical Industry Practice with JSA
  • Fellows will be integral team members in the Medical Information and Communications department with a 6 month rotation at Janssen’s healthcare professional directed call center.
  • Fellows will be provided with in-depth experiences leading to advanced professional skills and knowledge in communication of medical and scientific information.
Clinical Practice Rotation 

The fellows will spend a total of 6 months in a clinical practice setting in their designated therapeutic area. The fellows will utilize their clinical knowledge and drug information skills to work with a collaborative team of healthcare professionals to develop:

  • Skills in providing drug information services
  • Verbal and written communication skills by delivering presentations and writing drug class reviews
  • Expand knowledge about the functions of the hospital Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee/Subcommittees
  • Awareness of industry – healthcare provider relationships as they pertain to hospital practice 
  • The fellows will also gain additional experiences in their specific therapeutic areas and will be involved in both inpatient and outpatient care. This unique program will provide the fellows with the knowledge of evidence-based medicine as it relates to patient care and pharmacy practice.
University

Fellows will also receive an appointment at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration. Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in both didactic teaching on campus and experiential course work at the practice site. Upon fulfilling the program requirements and teaching responsibilities, fellows will also be awarded a Teaching Certificate.

Term & Schedule

The fellowship term is from July 1 to June 30 of the subsequent year. An individualized schedule will be tailored to the needs and interests of the fellow. Goals and objectives will be developed for each rotation. The Fellow will spend approximately 4 days per week at the JSA facility and one day per week on campus at the University of the Sciences.
