Philadelphia College of Pharmacy
A Tradition of Excellence in Pharmacy Education
Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP) is the first school of pharmacy in the Western hemisphere. For nearly two centuries, we’ve trained leaders and innovators in pharmacy practice, research, education, and industry. Six of the top pharmaceutical companies in the world were founded by our alumni—pioneers like McNeil, Lilly, and Wyeth. Innovation, science, and patient care converge at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, creating a lifetime of opportunity and the chance to make a difference for our graduates.
Pharmacies and Beyond: Pharmacists’ Roles as Healthcare Providers
Pharmacists are responsible for important aspects of patient care. Every day, pharmacists counsel patients about prescription and over-the-counter medications and health conditions such as the flu, diabetes, hypertension, and more. Our graduates go beyond dispensing drugs and medication therapy management at neighborhood pharmacies—they play important roles in managed care organizations, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and regulatory agencies.
Pharmacology/Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Science Behind Medicines
Philadelphia College of Pharmacy graduates discover and deliver the healthcare innovations that advance patient care. All of our majors emphasize the link between science and medicine, but few do so more directly than the Pharmacology and Toxicology and Pharmaceutical Sciences baccalaureate programs. At the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, you’ll learn how the science behind today’s medicines applies directly to their effects on the body: why drugs work the way they do, how effective certain medications are, which adverse effects are associated with certain drugs, and how pharmaceutical dosage forms are developed and manufactured. Many of our students continue their USciences education through MS and PhD programs in pharmacology/toxicology, pharmaceutics, and pharmacy administration.
