Careers in Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Demand for chemists with specialization in the pharmaceutical field is high. You will be able to pursue rewarding positions in pharmaceutical companies, where you may function as part of a drug development team or work in production, quality control, or sales, and with government laboratories such as those at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health.

Career Activities

  • Pharmaceutical chemists who go on to obtain a PhD degree design and produce new substances that can help prevent, cure, and relieve symptoms of diseases.
  • Using both sophisticated equipment and simple procedures to study drugs and chemicals that are present in samples taken from humans or animals
  • Developing new methods to determine whether an experimental drug is actually absorbed by the tissue where it needs to work
  • Working in a team with biochemists, organic chemists, pharmacologists and toxicologists to develop and test new drugs.
