Research Summary

My research has uncovered a class of compounds with significant anti-AIDS activity. Using medicinal chemical principles I am trying to design and synthesize more active members in this family. One example of these novel drugs, NCI-667951, or 2-(2-nitrophenylsulfonyl)-N, 4-dimethylaniline, is shown. Other research involves the large-scale synthesis of a key intermediate of adriamycin, a naturally occurring anti-cancer agent.

However, it should be noted that as a result of my recent appointment as an Emeritus Professor, effective in Fall 2002, I will not be accepting any new research students into my laboratory. I will continue to direct the graduate students currently working in my laboratory, and will continue to be available for consultation in my areas of expertise.
