Philadelphia College of Pharmacy of USciences is pleased to present the 34th Annual Symposium on Advances in Pharmacy Practice, a continuing pharmacy educational program, developed for pharmacists to be kept up-to-date on pharmacy practice.

This annual symposium provides the most current continuing education on newly approved drugs presented by the foremost authorities in the field. Daniel A. Hussar, PhD, will present New Drugs of 2012 and Steve Sheaffer, PharmD, FASHP will present Medication Safety.

The introduction of new drugs into the marketplace is one of the most important topics for pharmacists. For pharmacists to remain current, it is imperative to possess knowledge of innovations and advancements. It is equally important to understand current medication safety issues affecting pharmacy practice.

Learning Objectives

New Drugs of 2012

After attending this program, pharmacists will be able to:

  • Identify the indications, routes of administration, important pharmacokinetic properties, and unique characteristics of new therapeutic agents marketed in 2012.
  • Identify the most important adverse effects and precautions of the new drugs.
  • Compare the new drugs to the older therapeutic agents to which they are most similar in activity.

Medication Safety
  • Define and differentiate terms related to medication safety, medication errors and safe medication practices.
  • Describe the intent of REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies) and their implications to pharmacy practice.
  • Apply the following medication principles to community and hospital pharmacy practice: high alert medications, look alike-sound alike medications, error-prone abbreviations, root cause analysis (RCA), independent verification.
  • Identify opportunities to utilize medication reconciliation process during transitions of care between the community and acute care settings
  • Debate strategies for and benefits of documenting, benchmarking, reviewing and reporting medication events.
  • Describe initiatives by private and government payers to link quality with improved patient outcomes.

Continuing Education Credit

Philadelphia College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

This program (0056-0000-12-081-L01-P) (Pharmacy) at 0.3 CEUs and (0056-0000-12-082-L05-P) (Medication Safety) at 0.2 CEUs is acceptable for 5.0 hours of continuing education credits (0.5 CEUs.) Both continuing pharmacy education activities are knowledge-based activities.

For successful completion of the program and awarding of credit, the pharmacist must attend the sessions and complete and submit an online post-test and a program evaluation. A statement of credit indicating hours and CEUs based on the participant’s attendance can be printed immediately from https://cecenter.usciences.edu/ by registering, logging in, and entering the password given for each activity on-site.

Licensure Reminder
Pennsylvania pharmacists are required to complete 2 CE credits of Patient Safety.
